Your first ATX Small Dogs event should feel easy and enjoyable. Pack water, a collapsible bowl, high-value treats, waste bags, a secure harness, and any comfort item your dog already loves. Bring vaccination information if requested, and arrive with enough time for a calm introduction.
Most important, bring a patient mindset. Let your dog warm up at their own pace, stay attentive to their body language, and ask a Pack Leader for help if you need it. The best event memories come from dogs and people who feel comfortable being themselves.

Arriving prepared is less about packing every possible item and more about removing the small frictions that can turn a first outing into a source of stress. A collapsible bowl and fresh water address the practical reality of Texas heat and the limited shade at some outdoor gathering spots. High-value treats something the dog does not receive every day give an owner a quiet way to mark calm behavior without drawing unnecessary attention. A secure harness, rather than a collar alone, offers better control if a sudden noise or passing dog momentarily unsettles a small companion. Waste bags and vaccination records simply meet the basic expectations of shared space. The comfort item a familiar toy or soft mat often proves more useful than owners expect; it gives the dog a portable anchor in an unfamiliar setting.
The atmosphere at ATX Small Dogs events is deliberately measured. Gatherings are designed for dogs under 25 pounds, with attention paid to spacing, volume, and the freedom to observe rather than perform. Newcomers are not expected to circulate immediately. Many dogs spend the first portion of an event simply watching from a short distance, and that choice is respected. Pack Leaders move through the group offering quiet guidance when needed, but the emphasis remains on each owner reading their own dog.
What distinguishes the community is the range of people who gather around these small companions. Our members include singles, married couples, empty nesters, LGBTQ+ individuals, retirees and divorcees; people of every age; households with or without children who regard their dogs as central to daily life; and owners who treat their small fur babies with the same love and devotion others reserve for human family members. Some members have arrived in Austin as immigrants and built new lives with only a small circle of relatives nearby. Others have experienced complicated family relationships and understand the importance of creating meaningful connections outside traditional family structures. For many, their small dog has become part of that chosen family and ATX Small Dogs offers a place where those connections can grow naturally.

VIP membership deepens that connection. Members describe the relationships that form as closer to family than to casual acquaintance. The difference is intentional: smaller group sizes, earlier access to events, and the consistent presence of the same Pack Leaders allow trust to accumulate rather than reset with every gathering. The waiting list for VIP membership is open; interested owners can join by clicking the Join VIP icon or the Become VIP button on the community site. Free membership remains available through the Join Free button for those who prefer to begin with public events. New dates and locations are announced regularly on the ATX Small Dogs Facebook page and Instagram account; staying tuned to those channels is the most reliable way to remain current.

Partnerships and collaborations are welcomed. Local businesses, pet-service providers, and organizations aligned with the values of careful small-dog ownership are invited to explore joint events or shared initiatives. I’m Yenis Monterrey, Pack Leader and founder of ATX Small Dogs in Austin, Texas. Since launching in January 2025, I’ve shaped the community around a simple principle: small dogs and their people thrive when their environment is designed with their unique needs and scale in mind. The result is a welcoming gathering place where preparation, patience, responsible ownership, and genuine connection matter more than performance.
